Can I Go to a Fertility Appointment Without My Partner?

By Fernando Akerman, MD | Fertility Center of Miami

If you have been trying to conceive without success, you may be wondering whether you can start a fertility evaluation on your own. Perhaps your partner cannot attend the appointment, is not ready to undergo testing, or you simply want to understand your reproductive health before deciding on the next steps.

The good news is that you can start by seeing a fertility specialist on your own. Although evaluating both partners is generally recommended, an individual consultation can still provide valuable information about your fertility and help you understand what to do next.

Is It Better to Evaluate Both Partners?

Yes. When a couple is experiencing difficulty conceiving, fertility testing should ideally involve both partners.

Male factors contribute to a substantial proportion of infertility cases, so evaluating only the woman may leave important questions unanswered. A semen analysis is commonly part of the initial fertility assessment, alongside testing and evaluation for the female partner.

However, this does not mean you need to postpone your own appointment until your partner is ready to participate. Starting with your own evaluation can be a useful first step.

What Can a Fertility Specialist Evaluate During an Individual Appointment?

If you attend a consultation without your partner, your doctor can review your medical and reproductive history and determine which tests may be appropriate for you.

Depending on your circumstances, this may include:

  • Ovarian reserve: Blood tests such as AMH can help estimate your remaining egg supply and guide treatment planning.
  • Fallopian tube health: Testing can help determine whether your fallopian tubes are open.
  • Ovulation: Your menstrual history and, when appropriate, hormone testing can help assess whether you are ovulating regularly.
  • Uterine health: Imaging may be recommended to evaluate the uterus and identify potential concerns.
  • Overall health: Your medical history and general health can help your specialist assess factors relevant to pregnancy.

These tests can provide useful information, although they cannot establish the complete cause of infertility without considering other relevant factors, including your partner's reproductive health.

What If My Partner Is Not Ready for Fertility Testing?

It is not unusual for partners to approach fertility testing at different times or feel differently about the process.

If your partner is not ready to be evaluated, you can still use your appointment to discuss your concerns, understand your reproductive health, and learn which next steps may be appropriate.

Your specialist can also explain why evaluating both partners matters and help you understand how additional testing may contribute to a more complete assessment.

The important thing is not to let uncertainty about your partner's participation prevent you from seeking information about your own fertility.

When Should You Schedule a Fertility Consultation?

If you are under 35 and have been trying to conceive for 12 months without success, a fertility evaluation is generally recommended. For women aged 35 and older, the recommendation is usually after six months. At age 40 or older, seeking an evaluation sooner is appropriate.

You should also consider consulting a specialist earlier if you have irregular periods, a history of reproductive conditions, or other concerns about your fertility.

At Fertility Center of Miami, you can begin by discussing your individual situation and learning which evaluations may be appropriate for you.

You do not have to wait for your partner to attend your first appointment. Schedule a consultation with a fertility specialist to understand your reproductive health and take the first step toward your family-building goals.
